Are you pregnant? An alcohol-free pregnancy is essential for a healthy start for your baby. There is no "safe amount of alcohol" you can drink when pregnant. Only by not drinking alcohol at all can you prevent the problems alcohol can cause for the pregnancy or the unborn child. When you drink alcohol, the alcohol enters the unborn child through the blood and amniotic fluid. A baby's liver cannot yet break down the alcohol. Alcohol, therefore, stays in the baby's blood longer.
